This is the home page for the 2008 Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program in Mathematics at Oregon State University . This is the 22nd year that OSU has offered a REU Program in Mathematics!!

Dennis J. Garity is directing the program this year. This program will support 10 undergraduate students and will run for eight weeks during the summer of 2008. This page contains links to a more detailed description of the program, descriptions of potential projects, and instructions on applying either on line or via a printed application.

Why consider Oregon State University? Three good reasons are the beautiful location, the helpful faculty and the range of projects available. Here are some comments by students who were in the program during the past few years.

Emily Putnam: "The REU at OSU is a wonderful, intellectually stimulating program, providing great exposure to higher math. Come and have fun for your summer working in areas you won't see in your regular program."

Jennifer Kimble: "The REU at Oregon State is definitely worth your time. The atmosphere is relaxed, so all you have to worry about is your project. The state of Oregon is absolutely beautiful and is a 'must see' for everyone."

Shawn Alspaugh: "The OSU REU is a great experience. You get the opportunity to do interesting math at your own pace in your own style with professors who are really knowledgeable and helpful. You learn a lot about a wide variety of topics, as well as learning a specific area very deeply. Also, Oregon is a beautiful state to enjoy on those moments when you are away from the mathematics that you work on throughout the week."

Braden Soper: "The Oregon State University REU was a great experience that made for a wonderful summer. It provided an intellectually and socially stimulating environment placed in one of the most beautiful states in the country. I highly recommend it. GO BEAVERS!"

Kathleen Meloney: "The Oregon State REU Program was a great learning experience for me. This program helped me get a better understanding for what is involved in mathematical research and how to tackle large problems by breaking them into smaller pieces. Corvallis, although a small town, has a whole lot to offer during the summer. It was obvious during the summer that Oregonians enthusiastically celebrate the few months of dry weather they get!! The summer weather here is truly amazing--and this is coming from a native Floridian!! With the interesting city of Eugene, Portland, and the coast all within driving distance, it really is a great place a spend the summer."

Danica Dralus: "The REU at Oregon State University is a wonderful program. Many of my friends have attended mathematics REU's at other universities, and they say they had nothing to do, that the professors didn't push them to actually work, that it was a paid vacation. This is not the case at Oregon. The professors did ask for effort from their students, and as students we really got engrossed in our topics. I felt pushed to understand and subsequently compelled to perform. The guidance I received was a perfect blend of helpful hints and time to think things through by myself. The lectures provided glimpses into different topics in mathematics, and their informal setting made them more accessible. In addition, Oregon surprised me with its beauty, and Corvallis presented plenty of cultural activities close to campus. I have yet to hear of a program people enjoyed more than the one at OSU."
