2008 REU Program at Oregon State University

Program Dates: Program dates are June 23 - August 15, 2008.
Note: Deadline for consideration in first round offers is February 20, 2008.

April 9th - As of today, all ten positions for the summer are filled. We will be keeping applications on file in case openings occur later this Spring.

Potential Research Projects:

Dennis Garity will be directing the REU program this year. There will be four faculty members directing student projects: Nathan Gibson, Yevgeniy Kovchegov, and Donald Solmon from the Mathematics Department and Paul Cull from the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department.

The Proceedings from the past few years, (links at bottom of this page) should give you an idea of the variety and level of the projects.

Paul Cull is in the EE and Computer Science Department. He will direct 2 students this summer. He will be directing students in a project on Fibonnaci numbers, codes on graphs, population dynamics or Knight's tours on chessboards. For more details, see the expanded description of his projects.

Nathan Gibson is in the Mathematics Department. He will direct 2 students this summer. Professor Gibson will be directing students in a project on electromagnetic interrogation which can involve numerical analysis, inverse problems, or mathematical modeling. For more details, see the expanded description of his project.

Donald Solmon is in the Mathematics Department. He will direct 2 students this summer. He will be directing projects in the area of geometric tomography. This area investigates convex bodies in the plane and in in three dimensional space and tries to determine information about these bodies from information about their intersection with directed rays. For more details, see the expanded description of his projects.

Yevgeniy Kovchegov is in the Mathematics Department. He will direct 4 students this summer. His area of research is probability and stochastic processes. . For more details, see the expanded description.
